BENEFITS OF LITERACY

Literacy was seen as a benefit personally, politically and sociologically.

When one can read what is written in the agreement, one can no longer be cheated into paying more than what the contract says tying one for life in indebtedness. Literacy was seen as a way out of poverty.

Politically, everyone who can read and write can vote. Officials elected could determine how the people may be governed. With elections, the balance of power could shift from the few, the elite, to the masses with an increased population of literate citizens.

Sociologically, dissemination of information is faster and more efficient with the publication of newspapers than can be accomplished with face to face communication once contact has been made with other people. How to take care of one’s health, how to have higher yield in the rice field, how to control tuberculosis – these are some of the benefits for knowing how to read and write.

Each One Teach One

The enthusiasm for literacy continued. It was funded by the mission.

When there was a downturn in economic conditions, the mission could no longer support the literacy campaign. The teachers had to be terminated from their employment. One Chief came up with a suggestion. Let everyone who could read and write teach another and keep the movement going. The idea was well received. From then on, the literacy campaign adopted the slogan, “Each one teach one.”

Mentoring new students was beneficial to the mentor as well. With each successful mentoring, the mentor gains a deeper insight on the material and method. Through teaching one shares one’s skill and participates in the mission of creating world literacy.

World Literacy

Dr. Laubach continued his work of spreading literacy across the globe. He used the same method in every place:

Work cooperatively with local educators and interested citizens.

Figure out the spoken language vocabulary and structure.

Figure out the best possible keyword for each letter.

Make large charts showing keyword, picture and syllables.

Each one teach one.

Use gentle voice tone in teaching, no harsh words nor put-downs.

Dr. Laubach travelled to different countries applying his method, creating new charts particularly designed to teach reading the language of the country. He won the admiration and support of famous leaders – Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore and Jawaharlal Nehru. Wherever he was, he was teaching, transforming men and women into literate citizens and inspiring leaders to continue the literacy campaign.
